2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Change Comes After Poor Response
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure notified team members about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had revealed the need for a distinct vision.
Ismailer expressed that the team is now reimagining the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
Trend of Key Recruitment
This announcement mirrors a similar move taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the complete content from Ismailer's announcement:
Team—
I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the necessity for a sharper vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s positioned to deliver on its promise to our audience.
The trust in this project strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable development you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of the team. After several months of conversations, Ben officially joins us on the specified date.
His management and experience in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having dedicated the last 15 years creating and overseeing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving Ben soon. We are all looking forward to continue observing the evolution of the game in the weeks to come.
The President
Background of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman currently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Concept
Project Ethos was revealed in last year alongside a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Take on the opponents with fresh skills, stakes, and tests that change every round. Do you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The choice is up to you."
Project Ethos has not yet received an official launch window or platforms, but fans can look forward to further news as creation continues.
