Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
