Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
