EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
