Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police state they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then located many other smeared cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state preliminary tests show the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its source; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident rendered him without words and had to be resolved quickly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he stated on a platform, referring to the death of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
