A minimum of 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
